History and Background
Several of the state's business leaders were assembled
by Governor Bruce King, in 1991, to help improve the quality of education in
New Mexico. They agreed that both the education and the business
communities would benefit from such a cooperative effort, resulting in the
formation of the Governor's Business Executives for Education (GBEE). Their
mission is to establish a climate for continuous improvement of New Mexico's
education system through the partnership of business, education, and
government to achieve "Best-In-Class" results for all students in New
Mexico.
In l992, the GBEEs established the Strengthening Quality in Schools (SQS)
Initiative to accomplish their mission. The SQS vision is to have
"Successful Quality Students in Schools of Quality Statewide," and the
mission was clear -- to accelerate the improvement of student achievement
and system performance in New Mexico schools by promoting Baldrige Criteria
and Quality Concepts as the basis of an integrated education system and to
lead selected statewide and local initiatives to provide challenging,
engaging and relevant learning opportunities.
SQS has been implemented in phases beginning in 1992 and now is in its 7th
phase of training. Demand for SQS training continues to grow, especially
with the strong support of the current governor and the modeling of the
Baldrige Criteria from the Secretary of Education and other leaders of the
NM Public Education Department. Over 4,000 educators in 200 schools in 33
districts are being served this school year directly impacting over 120,000
students in New Mexico!
